The Linux System Administrator

Description:
Responsibilities
ž The LINUX System Administrator will have primary responsibility for
but
not limited to the following:
- Installation, administration, operation, maintenance, upgrade,
security,
and technical analysis/troubleshooting for the following hardware:
- Servers for website and email hosting, database access, file Storage
-
including SAN technologies
- Switches, routers, patch panels, cabling
- LAN/WAN connectivity, including firewalls and VPN routers
- Data backup/restoration, disaster recovery planning, implementation
and
documentation
- Identifying SA tasks, which require automation and automate them
- Programming in an administrative language (PERL, or shell), for
task
automation.
- Internetworking of UNIX with other operating systems
- Providing maintenance, installation, configuration of servers
- Providing and maintaining backup and restoration procedures, print
services, file services
- Providing administration support for UNIX servers in production
environment
- Managing system accounts
Requirements
ž Strong Experience in Linux mainly and some windows PLUS knowledge
of
Internet related packages like set up intranets, Apache, MySQL, Perl,
etc.
and of course email and email services
ž A thorough understanding and 2 years experience maintaining UNIX-
based
operating systems, such as: FreeBSD, Linux and Solaris
ž Understanding of paging and swapping, inter-process communication,
devices
and what device drivers do, file system concepts ("inode",
"superblock"),
can use performance analysis to tune systems. A solid understanding
of
networking/distributed computing environment concepts, as well as an
understanding of principles of routing, client/server programming, and
the
design of consistent network-wide file system layouts
- Experience installing and maintaining network/power cabling
- Experience installing boards and memory into systems
- Experience with monitoring tools and performance tuning
- Ability to perform SCSI device setup and installation
- Competent in installing/configuring peripherals (for example,
disks,
printers, or tape devices)
- Understanding of configuring and maintaining RAID data storage
devices,
SAN storage and other storage devices
- Excellent knowledge of TCP/IP Networks and protocols and
applications such
as DNS, RADIUS, SMTP, POP3, Web, etc.
- Knowledge of SQL and SQL servers (MSSQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc)
- Knowledge and understanding of business practices
- Experience in designing/supporting high availability/fail over
systems
- People and project management experience
- Telecommunications experience a definite asset
ž Required Background:
ž - 2+ years directly related Linux system administration experience
- 2+ years of general technical experience
- B.S. degree or equivalent experience required
ž Bilingual Enlish and French a MUST
